Crafting distinctive spaces, creating a living art installation for your environment
A once almost derelict builders yard has assumed a new identity. We have brought our SIGNATURE STYLE to the Cotswolds & refurbished this Grade II-listed, early 19th-century property to create a country abode with a difference.
For us, it was inevitable that the cottage interior would be radically altered to an urban-minded, decluttered aesthetic. The property dates to around 1800 when it was Simmonds, a well-known builder’s yard that’s intrinsic to the town of Minchinhamptons heritage.
It was in need of a painstaking restoration & was stripped back to its bare bones to be REBUILT & REDESIGNED. Stone walls were exposed & lime plastered & the original sash windows & floorboards were restored so the house could breathe again.
Our INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO has a penchant for geometry & we think this makeover is an alternative to the norm. With a studio shop & glass-boxed gallery on the ground floor, the quirky chopped-&-changed layout was part of the building’s appeal. That said, the house did require a full-on renovation that is sympathetic to the age of the property & where the original fabric of the building remains unchanged.
Dialled back & clean, the interior has no trace of country kitsch. A predominantly neutral palette allows the collected furniture to stand out. We wanted the space to be muted so it would show off particular art, furniture or ceramics.
In lieu of upholstered furniture, we DESIGNED & CUSTOM MADE all of the minimalist oak joinery which includes beds, cabinets, storage & benches. This signature bespoke aspect of our work informs all of our residential & commercial interior design work, be it a new office for an advertising agency or a concept hotel.
Drawn to simplicity, more so than specific eras, one of the amazing pieces on show includes the curved De Sede DS-600 Non-Stop sofa. The biggest of its type, the sofa had to be transported in 32 individually zipped pieces.
Throughout the home, there’s an overriding sense of confidence, particularly when it comes to COLOUR PLAY. Bright hues vie for supremacy with the neutrals of the natural lime walls. For instance, the Studio MacLean-brand yellow denotes the transition between gallery & studio. Upstairs in the living room, built-in bookcases are painted an Yves Klein blue to pop within the natural muted palette.
The master bedrooms ENSUITE BATHROOM was formally a storage space for a paint shop & mixing machine & we discovered it was holding six tons of concrete resting dangerously on the timber frame that needed removing. It has now been fitted with a backlit Boffi pipe shower.
We hope this huge RESTORATION project & now home is almost like a living art installation & an extension of Studio MacLean’s work & vision.
